Launching a Reading Workshop
At the start of the year the pupils our introduced to the two boxes in our class; the Reading Workshop Box and the Reading Workshop Folders Box. Our Reading Workshop Box contains Oxford and Treetop readers from stage 9 up to stage 15. There is a range of fiction, non-fiction, myths, legends, classics and autobiographies. There is a wide range of stages in our box to suit the reading ages of every individual pupil in my class.
Each stage is seperated by coloured card listing the stage, the books in the stage and the reading age. Every stage represents appropriate reading ages.Click on the link; this will take you to the Oxford Reading Chart illustrating year group, bands and stages. http://www.oxfordreadingtree.com/chart/
Each book is accompanied by worksheets.
Each book is accompanied by worksheets.
At the start of the year pupils are also introduced to the Oxford/ Treetop Readers. The pupils are made aware that the readers are a part of a pack and that it is very important to take care of them. Each pupil receives a reader according to their reading ability, they have a week to read their book. They read this book during DEAR Time each day and read it each night for homework.
Our Reading Workshop begins every Wednesday with pupils handing out the Reading Workshop Folders. Each folder contains a reading workshop copy, a task sheet and a reading log.
The pupils are introduced to the four stations:
- Mini-Lesson Station
- Picture Station
- Worksheet Station
- Guided Reading Station
This helps them understand that our Reading Workshop follows the same predictable routine every week and the pupils know what is expected of them. Below are copies of the four stations, I leave these at each station as this helps the pupils familiarise themselves with the process.

Each pupils begins the process by filling in their reading log, documenting what book they read, who the author is, what genre it is, date completed and filling in if it was easy, just right or challenging. Click into the document to see a copy of the reading log.(Adapted from Beth Newingham) This reading log is crucial in reflecting the pupils growth in reading over the school year.
